Description

Black beaded watch chain worked in a flat ribbon connected to a gold swivel snap clasp. Gold beads woven into the chain depict crosses, crowns, keys,hearts and other designs, as well as spelling out the maker's initials.

"Mementos: Jewelry of Life and Love from Historic New England": More than forty years after beaded chains faded from popularity, Margaret Duncan Phillips decided to make one for her new husband, Stephen Henry Phillips. Married in 1871, the couple had to live apart as Stephen pursued business in California. This chain uses the same sentimental motifs as those from an earlier generation.
