Description

This circular brooch is made up of concentric rings of cut, bezel-set blue paste stones and strung seed pearls. The center is set with a large baroque pearl surrounded by seed pearls, a row of bezel-set single-cut blue pastes, another row of seed pearls strung on gold wire, then the outermost row of alternating oval and round cut blue pastes. All gems are set in an openwork silver-gilded foliate mount. The closure on the reverse is a hinged pin and hook.

Label

"Mementos: Jewelry of Life and Love from Historic New England": Charles Eliot Norton was the first professor of the history of fine arts at Harvard University and friend to many late nineteenth-century cultural luminaries. He traveled widely, collecting and writing extensively on literature, history, and art. His daughters Sara and Elizabeth each had excellent taste. The Norton family jewelry collection reflects their diverse interests.
