Peering through the end of this small mother-of-pearl barrel reveals a photograph of a popular tourist destination at Watkins Glen, New York. Although Stanhopes are named for the eighteenth-century Englishman who developed the lens, it was a Frenchman in the 1850s who combined the lens with miniature photographs to produce a tiny keepsake.
