"Cherished Possessions": Wallace Nutting began producing reproduction furniture in 1917. At first, his studio made small, readily affordable furnishings such as chairs and tables. In time, Nutting's ambition grew. In 1930, this reproduction “Pilgrim” cupboard, one of Nutting's most expensive pieces, was offered for $645. It is a faithful copy of a seventeenth-century cupboard Nutting had purchased from a member of the Parmenter family in Sudbury, Massachusetts. One hundred years earlier, a family member had cut the base off the cupboard, and thus the bottom third of the reproduction represents Nutting's conjectural restoration.
