Painting depicting a scene from an epic poem by Torquato Tasso about the First Crusade (eleventh century). Oil on canvas. One of four scenes. This scene depicts canto VII; stanza VI: "The Lost Erminia Seeks Refuge in the Shepherd's Hut." Erminia, inflamed by passion for Tancred, disguises herself in the armor of Clorinda, hoping thereby to deceive and entrap the Christian Prince. Failing to find him anywhere, she loses her way. Exhausted by hunger and fatigue, she entreats the hospitality of the shepherd.
