Ribbon back chairs were particularly popular in Essex County, Mass. and Portsmouth, New Hampshire in the late eighteenth century. This is one of a pair that descended in the Lord family and was undoubtedly used at the Lord family's home on Middle Street, now known as the John Paul Jones House
