A note on the back of the photograph states that the photograph was taken in 1885 or 1886, during the occupancy of William Sumner Appleton, Sr., son of Nathan Appleton, before the sale of the residence to Arthur Lyman. The note also indicates that the portrait shown is Bartholomeus van der Helst's portrait of a burgomaster of Saardam.
