Drawing room in the house of the second Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis, Mt. Vernon St. Cor. Joy, about 1873, Boston, Mass.
This photograph was taken for one of the drawing rooms in the house of the late Mrs. Harrison Gray Otis, on Mt. Vernon Street, Boston. It was presented to me at the time by her son H. G. Otis, 1873.
It was the intention of Mr. Otis to keep this drawing room in its original state, in memory of his mother -- but while he was in Europe, and the house under going a change -- this room was also changed to his regret, owing to some misunderstanding; the regret was also shared by a large circle of friends.
"The Warwick Vase" portraits of Washington, Shakespeare, Longfellow, Stuart and his nephew Stuart Newton &c - with other objects familiar to Mr. Arthorp[?] ("my good cousin Robert", as Mrs. O. would often say) & his family as they have for years occupied this favorite corner (to Mrs. O. & her friends) This picture shall be for any of Mr. H's family that may survive me.
