Description

The threat that the Old South meetinghouse might be abandoned set off a 19th-century firestorm. As Bostonians flocked from the crowded downtown to the new Back Bay area, the very existence of the Old South was in danger. The reaction was incredible, and marked a change in the American thinking towards a changing public environment. Michael Holleran looks at what became the genesis of the modern preservation movement.
