Medium-sized wooden bowl, or calabash, from Hawaii, called an umeke. The bowl has a smooth, polished exterior and unpolished interior. The top edge of the bowl curves inward. The thick walls of the bowl are cracked and have been repaired using a traditional technique of inserting hourglass-shaped plugs. Umeke are highly esteemed in Hawaii and passed down from generation to generation.
