Large hollowed-out coconut bowl attached to a koa wood pedestal stand [a] with cover [b], from Hawaii. An accompanying note explains that the bowl is made from a very large coconut which was raised on the slopes of the Punch Bowl (in Honolulu), and presented to a member of the Phillips family by a descendant of a great Kona chief. The bowl and stand are part of a long Hawaiian tradition of calabash or bowl making. This bowl was made for display.
