One of a pair of Anglo-Indian arm chairs with deeply recessed intricately carved back with vines and berries, arm supports ending in creature heads, heavy carved, scrolled legs, deep shirt with carved grotesque, red damask slip seats.

"Cherished Possessions": On May 21, 1849, Charles Eliot Norton boarded the Milton in Boston, Massachusetts, and set sail heading east for India, employed as a supercargo for the Boston mercantile firm of Bullard & Lee. Supercargoes were responsible for overseeing the selling and buying of a ship's cargo in foreign ports. Once the Milton was filled with Indian cloth and spices, Norton left to explore the exotic countryside. After three months, Norton completed his travels and returned to Boston, laden with purchases, which very likely included this fantastically carved chair, one of a pair from Bombay.
