Side chair. One of a pair. Mahogany, satinwood, chestnut, maple. Pattern of splat taken from Hepplewhite's 1788 "Cabinet Makers and Upholsterers Guide", pl. 26. Shield back with molded edges. Five bars radiate from a fan of inlaid satinwood at base of shield. Molded and slightly shaped stiles with small ear between shield and stiles. Seat upholstered over frame and swag tacked; serpentine in front. Rests on tapered molded front legs, back legs are square and project slightly. Rectangular H-stretchers and a stretcher between back legs. Crest rail has carved basket and trailing foliage. Bars have carved foliate "cuffs" at tops. Middle bar has carved bell-flower drop. Back legs chamfered on inside.

John Hancock was said to have owned this chair and another identical one stamped "WF" now in the collection of the MFA Boston. One of these may be the one that appears in the "Interior View of the Hancock House," published in Harper's Weekly in 1859.
