This collection includes several account books and material related to the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Harvard College, and Phillips Exeter Academy. This series is arranged in six subseries according to material type and then by chronology.

Series
James Rundlet May was the son of Louisa Catherine Rundlet and George Hall May and the twin brother of Jane Rundlet May. He was born in 1841. After his father's death in 1858, he and his mother and sister moved to the Rundlet house on Middle Street. He went to Phillips Exeter Academy and later graduated from Harvard. Duirng the Civil War, he was an officer in the Navy with the rank of acting assistant surgeon. He studied at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia and received his degree in 1866; he then returned to Portsmouth. He married Mary Ann Morison in 1881. They had one child, Ralph May, who became the final resident of the Rundlet-May house. James Rundlet May was active in local charitable work. He was a director of the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for more than 45 years and was its treasurer and president. He was also a member of the Federal Fire Society for over 50 years. He died in 1918.
