New York Winter Antique Show, January 2010Henry Moore presented Walter and Ise Gropius with this bronze sculpture when he visited their home in Lincoln, Massachusetts, in 1946. Cast the previous year, it is one of an edition of seven. The reclining figure was a frequent motif in Henry Moore's work throughout his long career. He explained: "The subject-matter is given. It's settled for you, and you know it and like it, so that within it, within the subject that you've done a dozen times before, you are free to invent a completely new form-idea."
Centennial Acquisitions Exhibiton, October 22nd-23rd, 30th-31st, 2010:When Henry Moore visited his friends the Gropiuses at their home in Lincoln, Massachusetts, in 1946, he brought this reclining bronze figure as a gift. In this 1958 photograph of Walter and Ise Gropius with their neice, the figure is seen prominently displayed on a shelf in the living room. It was inherited by the Gropiuses daughter and was one of the few items that left the house before it came to Historic New England. She arranged for its return this past year.
