Description

Framed watercolor painting of a ship at sea. The image of the ship "Union" fills most of the picture, the bow faces the viewer and the stern is pointed toward the left half of the picture, an American flag is flying from the bow. In the background is another ship, a harbor with a small city, and a mountain.

The harbor / is probably Leghorn and date about 1816 / The "Union" was built in Salem in 1802 for / Clifford Crowinshield and others. 250 tons / Registered at Salem Custom House as follows. / Mar. 20. 1802 C. Crowinshield & others. Geo. Hodges mas. / Feb. 16. 1804. Leopold Nichols. / Jan. 4. 1806. Stephen Phillips, Nathan and Geo. / Pierce, Geo Pierce master / Jan. 16. 1806. Stephen Phillips. Geo Pierce master / April 14. 1815. Stephen Phillips & Geo. Pierce. Wm. Osgood. / The "Union" went to Canton, Calcutta & St. Petersburg / and made several voyages to Sumatra for pepper. / she was lost on Baker's Island in a snow / storm Feb 24. 1817 on her return from Sumatra. / see Salem Gazette of Feb 25. 1817. / This was the first full rigged ship that Capt.
