Description

Painting depicting a scene from an epic poem by Torquato Tasso about the First Crusade (eleventh century). Oil on canvas. One of four scenes. This scene depicts Canto XII; Stanzas LXVIII-LXIX: "The Defeat and Baptism of Clorinda by Tancred." Tancred meets and mortally wounds Clorinda in single combat. Before she dies, he removes her helmet and learns he has slain the lady of his love. She reveals too late that his passion is returned, and receives baptism at his hand.
