Painting depicting a scene from an epic poem by Torquato Tasso about the First Crusade (eleventh century). Oil on canvas. One of four scenes. This scene depicts Canto XIX; Stanza CX: "The Last Fight of Tancred and Argantes." The colossal form of the slain Argantes lies stretched on the extreme left of the picture. In the foreground, Erminia and her attendant, Vafrino, are raising and endeavoring to revive Tancred. With the defeat and death of their gigantic leader, the resistance of the Moslems ceases, and Jerusalem is redeemed.
