"Captain James Cook, Circumnavigator. / Engraving by Sherwin after painting by Dance 9 1/2 x 12 London 178- / In May 1776 Captain Cook sat for a portrait to Dance. / It now hangs in the painted Chamber at Greenwich Hospital. It / was soon after engraved by Sherwin and has always been consi- / dered the finest representation of Cook. Dr. Samwell the / surgeon on the last voyage says 'the plate engraved by Sherwin / after a painting by Dance is the most excellent likeness and / the only one I have seen that bears any resemblance to him". / (Kitson page 342). / The artist Nathaniel Dance, 1735-1811, studied art with / and was a friend of Angelica Kaufman. He was one of the / founders of the Royal Academy and a most successful portrait / painter. He became a baronet and assumed the additional name of / Holland as sir Nathaniel Dance - Holland. This portrait of Cook / and one of Garrick as Richard III are his best known works. / The engraver John Keyse Sherwin, 1751-1790, was a / pupil of Bartolozzi.
