Description

Framed watercolor painting of a ship in water. It is painted black with a brown stripe with "Brookline" painted on the bow. On three masts there are seventeen unfurled sales. There are four blue and white flags on the first mast and a long red and blue with white stars pennant on the second mast. An American flag is flying from the stern. There are eight people on the deck and land can be seen on both sides in the background.

"Ship 'Brookline' of Salem. / Built at Medford Mass in 1831 for S.C. Phillips. / 349 tons. 120 ft. long, 25.2 ft beam. 12.7 ft deep. / Registered Jun 29. 1833. Stephen C. Phillips owner. / The 'Brookline' while owned by Mr. Phillips / made six voyages to Manilla with / which port Mr. Phillips had an extensive / trade. and one voyage to the West Coast / of South America. She was commanded / by Geo. Pierce, ... Robinson and C.H. Allen / In April 1844 she arrived in Boston / and was sold there. She was afterwards / used as a whaler out of New London / and finally sent to Buenos Ayres in the / early 60s and broken up there. / Copy made in 1903 by M. Mac Pherson of / an original water color, which long hung / in the old counting room at Phillips's Wharf / now in possession of S.W. & J.D. Phillips. / Feb 1903 Stephen W. Phillips." (handwritten)
