This square basket has a square, hinged lid that is set at a 45 degree angle from the sides of the basket, giving the basket a "diamond" orientation with a square opening. This form is often called a "handkerchief basket." It is woven with ash splints and sweetgrass and has a pair of small rings set at the bottom of the lid and on the base to form a closure. The lid is hinged with a pair of green ribbon ties. The entire box was woven first in a wide, loose checkerweave from wide ash splints. The artist then filled in the top "points" of the "diamond" with a second, narrow set of splint weavers.
