Arland Augustus Dirlam was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, on October 17, 1905. After completing his studies at Tufts in civil engineering in 1926, he obtained a master's degree from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design in 1929. From his office in Malden, Massachusetts, he was best known as an ecclesiastical architect, and designed dozens of churches throughout New England. Dirlam designed Bendetson Hall, Carmichael Hall, Cohen Auditorium, Hodgdon Hall, Jackson Gymnasium, and Sweet Hall on the Medford Campus of Tufts University. Among the numerous awards and recognitions he received for his work was an honorary doctorate from Tufts in 1953.
