Used in Cherished Possessions 2003-2005: This rug was purchased in 1906 by Jenny Tucker, who, at the age of forty, traveled from Maine to Wyoming, attempting to augment her family's income by staking a land claim there. Her letters home describe her experiences, including camping out in a log cabin, visiting local copper mines, and purchasing a Navajo rug “to sleep in now and later it can be cleaned and come home.”An interest in handcrafts coupled, ironically, with the successful subjugation of American Indian tribes, contributed to the growing popular appeal of American Indian goods at the end of the nineteenth century. American Indians were no longer perceived as a threat but instead as a vanishing race, and their goods came to be viewed as emblems of a noble, but lost, people.
