New York Winter Antique Show, January 2010: When Charles Russell Codman was completing the decoration of the parlor of his Beacon Hill home in 1824, he wrote to a friend in Paris, enlisting help. Codman sent exact dimensions of the bowed window wall, and asked his friend to find curtains that would complement his rose and yellow-colored carpet. Above all, he wanted articles "in the best of style-rich but not gaudy." While Historic New England has long owned faded remnants of the curtains that arrived from Paris, this nearly pristine sample is a recent discovery. (The gilded cornice is a reproduction of a period example in Historic New England's collection.)
