Description

Portrait of Mary Wheelwright Codman, pictured from the waist up, turned to the right. She is seated in a red-striped upholstered arm chair against a dark background, with a book open to a seascape on her lap. She wears a narrow gold wedding band on her left hand, and a scenic micromosaic brooch at her neck. Her black silk gown is fitted at the waist, with wide sleeves that narrow at the wrist in the mid-1840s style, with a white chemise with a collar set with lace frills and a white lawn day cap tied under her chin. The portrait is set in a gilt wooden frame with scroll and foliate borders.
