Lightship Handkerchief at sea, location unknown, undated

Description

Image of the lightship Handkerchief, No. 4 possibly in Nantucket Sound. Lightships were used in addition to lighthouses to guide ships through shipping paths that could be treacherous. The ship has an emergency life boat, crewmen on deck and an American flag flying from the sail.
