"Cherished Possessions": The New York newspaper the Independent was founded in 1848 by a group of transplanted New Englanders to promote Congregationalism and fight for the abolition of slavery. Henry Chandler Bowen (1813-1896), one of the paper's founders, eventually became its sole proprietor, publisher, and editor. This walking stick was a gift to Bowen from the staff at the Independent, celebrating his eightieth birthday in 1893. At the time, Bowen was still actively involved with the paper and would remain so until his death two and a half years later.
