"Cherished Possessions": This painting depicts the fictional character Rosalie, who, according to the accompanying poem written by the artist, is a woman just coming of age and surrendering to the strains of music heard at dusk. Rosalie may be modeled after Nathan Appleton's daughter Fanny, who later married the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Appleton commissioned the painting in 1835. Washington Allston trained extensively in England and Europe and is credited with introducing the romantic art movement to America.
