Label

"Cherished Possessions": This table reflects the ebullience of America as the nation approached its centennial-brash, loud, optimistic, proud, rich. The table's style represents the peak of Victorian design; it was variously called Renaissance, Louis XVI, and Neo-Grec in its day and has come to be known as Renaissance revival. Furniture made in the Renaissance revival style was, as one historian has put it, self-consciously "intimidating in its richness." Made with expensive materials and costly workmanship, this is the very height of "conspicuous consumption."
