Description

Long dark purple wool coat. The neckline has a folded down collar with split lapels. On the right lapel there is a button hole and under the left lapel there is a large tan plastic button. There are three more buttons down the left side and three more button holes down the right side. At the bottom of the sleeves there is a decorative purple wool strip attached with a small tan button. At the waistline there are two large pockets with top flaps that fold over the pockets on either side. The coat has an a-shape and has extra material at the bottom to add fullness. The interior of the coat is lined with purple silk at the top around the shoulder area, in the sleeves and extending to approximately just below the shoulder blades, then stopping. On the interior of the left side, there are three tiny buttons sewn on to the back of the large buttons on the front. All the edges of the wool on the inside are trimmed in thick purple cord to keep them from fraying. There is a purple silk cord sewn onto the interior neckline to form a loop and beneath that is a black square label with yellow stitching that reads: "William Read and Sons Inc. 364 Washington St. Boston". The back has an inverted pleat that is stitched at the top and bottom so it stays closed that runs from the neckline to approximately the shoulder blade area down the center of the coat. Immediately below the bottom stitching on that pleat, the inverted pleat continues all the way to the bottom of the coat. It is left open to give fullness to the coat. Across the back waist line area is a wide strip of purple wool that is attached at both side seams, forming a sort of belt effect.
