"Account book of George A. Brown from Oct 1, 1839" [inscribed on front page] to 1844 [date of last entry]. The Boston City Directory lists Brown as a cabinetmaker, whose shop was located on Blackstone St., and whose residence was on Belknap St. His accounts list the purchase of mahogany and veneers from Kittredge and Blake, furniture, on Brattle St., who evidently bartered the raw materials (in part) in exchange for finished pieces and/or frames for upholstered pieces. He also occasionally contracts out carving to other cabinetmakers (Follansbee and Wingate). A considerable amount of carved work (arms, toes, tops for ladies chairs, etc.) is sold to Edward Hixon, upholsterer. Also itemized are names of employees, hours/days worked, and occasionally the nature of the services rendered.
The method of keeping accounts seems to have changed in 1843, so that there is a problem of interpretation here that someone familiar with the convention of keeping such books will be able to understand.
