Description

"Old Newport Houses - 1875"

Boxed portfolio of 29 mounted albumen photographs, presented with "Compliments of Charles McKim" to "William Dean Howells" (possibly his brother in law?), circa 1880. Identity of photographer is not yet known. This album is cited in Vincent Scully's "Shingle Style" as one of the first known instances of American architects' becoming interested in "colonial" period architecture and furnishings.
