photo albums #177,178A
GUSN-194696
The album consists of 24 leaves, of which four are empty. The majority of the photographs depict domestic architecture in the following communities: Sandwich, West Barnstable, Marston Mills, Yarmouth, Dennis (including East and South Dennis), Chatham, Eastham and Wellfleet. There are also 2 pages depicting "Green Hill" in Brookline, and the Cheever House in Cliftondale, Massachusetts. There are also some photographs of unidentified domestic buildings. The photographic emphasis is on exterior elevations, including front and side views. There is a secondary emphasis on architectural details, including doorways and fences. The photographs, which measure approximately 3x5 (black and white throughout) appear to date to the 1910s, early 1920s and are of good documentary quality. There are no negatives. The album also includes 8 loose photographs, obtained from the Essex Institute probably at the same time period. These depict mantel pieces, designed by (or resembling) Samuel McIntire.

The album was found by their librarian among some stray materials. It was thought not to include any material that related to the firm's commissions ( although there are few examples that suggest they may have had a hand in remodelling.) It is speculated that the photographs were taken by ( of for) Mr. Charles A. Coolidge, a former member o f the firm, who had a known interest in colonial architecture.
