A military unit wearing bearskins and bandoliers and bearing rifles with fixed bayonets stand assembled at the foot of a hill (perhaps Flagstaff Hill) on Boston Common. A military band, some members of whom hold brass instruments such as trombones and trumpets, are gathered behind the soldiers. At the top of the hill, a group of spectators watch the proceedings.
