From right to left, Sarah Orne Jewett, her sister, Mary Rice Jewett, and possibly, Emily Davis Tyson, stand in the garden of the Jewett family house in South Berwick, Maine. The Jewetts and Tyson, who lived in Hamilton House in South Berwick, were neighbors and friends. The roof and a chimney of a building can be glimpsed through the foliage in the upper right of the image. The initials of the three women are handwritten on the lower border of the page of the photograph album: E.(D?).(T?)., M.R.J., S.O.J.
