Henry Chandler Bowen was a businessman and philanthropist in Woodstock, Connecticut and New York City. Bowen was married to Lucy Tappan, the daughter of abolitionist Lewis Tappan. Bowen founded the religion and anti-slavery journal "The Independent" in 1848. He built Roseland Cottage, a National Historic Landmark, located in Woodstock, Connecticut.
