Description

Watercolor of a masted ship with an American flag flying behind it. The ship is in the center of the scene with a church and other buildings on the coast near the right side. There is a smaller boat on the left side. The frame is painted black with a slightly raised outer edge and a beaded border around the inside edge.

"Ship "Ann Maria" of Salem. / Built at Essex in 1843 for David / Pingree and named for his wife. / Registered at Salem Custom House Aug. 5. 1843. / David Pingree and Charles Millett owners / Charles Millett master. 489 tons / Made some voyages to the East Indies and / was sold to New York owners in 1847. Capt / N. H. Millett who had sailed in her as a boy / told me she wound up her career as a / store ship in Melbourne Australia. / There is a oil painting by a Chinese artist / at the East India Marine Hall showing/ the ship at a Chinese port flying Pingree / signall This copy by M. MacPherson / was made for me in 1903 / April 1904. Stephen W. Phillips"
