Used in Cherished Possessions 2003-2005: Water bottles of all sorts became a staple of the ceramics industry from the middle of the nineteenth century until the end. Unglazed terra cotta bottles like these could be soaked, and the subsequent evaporation helped the contents stay cool.The style of these water coolers reflects the eclectic taste of their day. Their overall shape is suggestive of exotic Middle Eastern forms. The bottle decorated with a black painted band of griffins and grotesques bordered by Greek keys is classical; the beautifully painted fern leaves is a more naturalistic, perhaps Asian-influenced, design.
