"This is probably the oldest brick house now remaining in Boston. It was probably built by John Paine, and he sold it to Wm. Downe, in 1674. It stands at the extreme end of North Street, and has long been in possession of the Tremere family. Its peculiarities may be seen at a glance: the heavy bands, the various shapes of the windows, its massive chimneys, etc., are well worthy of notice; and the rear of the house, as well as the interior, are well worth a visit."
