Tileston House, cor. Prince and Margaret Streets

Description

"John Tileston, who lived in this house, was the most noted school-master that Boston ever had. He was born in Boston, Feb. 27, 1735. In 1762 he was appointed master of the school in Bennett Street, at a salary of $500 per annum; and here he remained until 1819, when he retired; but his salary, which he richly deserved, was continued to his death, Oct. 13, 1826.

"This house where he lived so long was once a very pleasant domicile, shaded by trees, but it has been shockingly disfigured, and, added to that, it retains scarcely any semblance of its former respectability. He left no descendants." From "Homes of Our Forefathers in Boston, Old England and Boston, New England" by Edwin Whitefield, 1889.
