"Charles Appleton Phillips / sone of Stephen C. Phillips / b. in Salem June 30 1841 / d. in Nevada / Virginia City Mar 2. 1876 / buried in Salem. / Harvard College 1860. Went / into the war and served / all through. He was Capt / of the 5th Mass Light Battery / and had a fine record as / an artillery officer with / the Army of Potomac in / nearly all the great battles. / After the war started in Ohio / but finally went to Nevada / in the silver excitement / and got pnemonia. / he was thought by my / father to be a very able / man whose career was / served by the war S.W.P."
