Men and horse-drawn carts stand outside the Louis Prang Printing Factory on Roxbury (Washington) Street. The cart on the left has "L. Prang & Co." printed on the side. Various individuals can be seen looking out the windows at the photographer. A sign on the building on the left side reads "Please uncheck your horses going up hill." Gardner Street intersects with Centre Street at the top of the hill. Text printed on the lower left and right corners reads "A.H. Folsom, Photographer, 48 Alleghany St."

The printory which Louis Prang-father of the American Christmas card-established in the 1860's, located on what was then Washington and Gardner Streets, Roxbury, Mass. The photographer was another Roxbury resident, A.H. Folsom, who is well-known for his photographs of domestic interiors and landscapes, including an impressive series of The Vale made in 1884. This photograph of the Prang factory dates to the same period. Collections of the Archives, SPNEA.
