Inscription

"Stephen H. Phillips IV. Lawyer of Salem, Atty-gen of Massachusetts and of the Hawaiian Islands. From a photograph taken by Black of Boston, on his return from the islands in 1871 to be married. He had many other photographs taken but always considered this the best. There is no portrait of him. This carbon enlargement from the original cabinet was made by Merrill of Salem. The rosette in the buttonhole is the badge of the Royal Hawaiian Order of Kamehamaha the Great. Labeled by me in 1911. Stephen W. Phillips." (handwritten)
