Description

A coat-of-arms centering a gold shield with lion rampant on a checkerboard band, surmounted by a helmet and leafy mantling, and a bannerette with inscriptions below. The watercolor has worked in colors of red, gray, blue, black and white. Also, gold pigment and ink on paper. It has an original "Hogarth" style frame with carved and gilded lip and sanded panel enclosed by molded and black painted outer member.

Inscription

Calligraphied in ink on the front of the image, under the shield is: ""SPERO"" and ""MELIORA"" . Written under this, at the bottom is: ""The beareth OR a Fiefs cheque AZURE and/ARGENT surmounted of a Lyon rampant GULES Langued and/[illeg.] AZURE [illeg.] GULES. By the name of STEWART"". On a typed label on the back is: Coat-of-arms of/Stewart of Blackhall./Matriculated in 1672/and 1677. From ""an Ord-/inary of Arms"" by Sir/James Balfour Paul. On another typed label on the back is: Stewart Arms/this is the Coat of Stewart of Blackhall (1672-1677). It was registered/in the office of the Lord Lyon at/Edinburgh in 1672./Attributed to George Searle, 1751-1796, /Newburyport; or to Robert Cowan of Salem,/ whose Scottish wife was Elizabeth Stewart.
