In Cherished Possessions, 2003-2005: This painting of the Victory at anchorage at Whampoa by the Chinese painter Namcheong was commissioned by the ship's captain, Oliver Lane. The painting is one of many ship portraits commissioned in China. Chinese entrepreneurs settled around the Cantonese port of Whampoa, and foreigners, waiting for their trade negotiations to be completed, could purchase goods and services directly from them. Namcheong was one of a large number of painters in Whampoa whose studios produced harbor views, ship paintings, portraits, and copies of pictures brought from home.

Inscription

In a small rectangular red stamp, appearing twice on the canvas back, is: NAMCHEONG/Painter In blue paint, on the flag is: V [for the name of the ship]. Typed on the frame back on the lower left rabbit, in a white label with a red border, is: Ship Victory, built in Newburyport by/Benjamin Dutton in 1851 for the China Trade. First captain, Oliver G. Lane of/Annisquam, from whose great great grand-/daughter Miss Alice Moore of 8 Arlington St., Annisquam, it was purchased in/1962.
