Drop-leaf table. Mahogany with hard maple hinge rails; white pine and other secondary wood. Rectangular table top with rectangular leaves. Two swing legs open to suppoprt leaves. Top and leaves each composed of one board. Thin hinge rails with two blocks set between each. Apron has double cyma-curved skirt. Rests cabriole legs with ball and claw feet.

Finely crafted talons on the ball and claw feet of this coastal Essex county drop-leaf table showcase the skill of the carver who made them. Many examples of similar tables feature the less costly, less detailed pad feet. This table belonged in the household of the prominent Coffin family of Newbury. Historic New England owns three nearly identical tables including this one, all with histories of ownership in Newbury. Tables like this were described in the period as Four foot Mehogany Table w. Claw Feet. Four foot refers to the size, when opened, which was roughly 48 square.
