In black paint on the very right of the canvas back is: J.F.C. von Lyman 1798- [No.6] (NFL notes that after the signature, ""No.6"" appears, but this cataloger sees no evidence of this.) Incised with a sharp instrument on top of the stretcher bar is: W [? or N or H] Waterman. An illegible, faded sticker/label along the top stretcher bar bears a lengthy two line inscription that would need an infrared exam to read. On a NFL jelly label, in fountain pen, to the right of this, presumably records what it said: Given to/ Helen W. Sonle/ by her Mother/ Alice Sonle. On the upper left stretcher bar, in black pencil - and repeated at the upper left is: #45-337. In the lower right of the frame back on a white jelly label, with blue fountain pen, is: Anthony? Waterman/ Scituate, Mass./ 1798.
