Description

The containers in the Packaging Collection represent companies in Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, whose products were available nationally. The boxes were used for cosmetics, chewing tobacco, clothing items, cutlery, dyes, food, medicines, pencils, stationery, and thread spools. Connecticut manufactured collars, combs, cuffs, cutlery, hooks and eyes, pocket knives, tea spoons, and thread. Massachusetts produced items such as collars, confections, cuffs, cutlery, ribbon, tacks, and thread. The boxes were used to hold items for women, like corsets and face powder, and men's accessories, like collars, cuffs, handerkerchiefs, and pocket knives. Many of the boxes are from thread manufacturers, including one still in business today, Coats and Clark.
