Description

Half-length portrait of Joshua Coffin (1792-1864). White-haired gentleman in black coat and white shirt in heavy, molded and gilded frame. Attached plaque reads: "1792--Joshua Coffin--1864/ Teacher-Humanitarian-Historian/ Whittier's Schoolmaster/ The last male of seven generations/ Born-lived-died in the Old Coffin House/ Presented by the children of his daughter/ Lucia Tappan Coffin Chase." On back inscription reads: "Joshua Coffin/ painted by Ada C. Williamson after the original portrait by John C. Naegle." Stamped on side and lower stretchers: "N. Snellenburg and Co./ Market at 11th to 12th sts./ Philadelphia, PA."
