Description

This collection includes 13 drawings related to a proposed house for Edwin Ginn to be built in Winchester, Massachusetts. Eleven drawings, which include perspectives, elevations, sections, and plans, for both the residence and greenhouse, were signed by McKim, Mead, and White. A plan of a vestibule for the Ginn House is stamped by A. H. Davenport. A sketch for a playhouse and colonnades is signed by architects Warren, Smith, and Biscoe. Edwin Ginn's house was ultimately built by Beaux-Arts architect Ernest Flagg.

Edward Ginn (1838-1914) founded the successful textbook publishing house Ginn and Company in 1867. He became known as a philanthropist and peace activist. Among his philanthropic works was the construction of low-income housing in Boston. In 1910 he donated $1,000,000 to establish the World Peace Foundation.
